Community Campus
In 2005 we started our work in a cluster of villages around Kyaliwajjala, expanding our reach in the following 15 years to now include over 50 villages throughout Uganda. In 2010, Connect Africa purchased 2 1/2 acres of land in the village of Joggo to create a community campus. Like Connect Africa, our community campus has grown since that initial purchase and includes the guest house, library, a large play area, and vocational training center. The community campus serves as hub for the many activities we host and sponsor. Children's Academic Enrichment Program Every Saturday—and three times per week during school holidays—50+ children come together on the community campus for lessons in academics, life skills, peer relationships, group play, and cultural singing and dancing. After their lessons, the children enjoy a hot cup of porridge and bread. Income Generating Activities Connect Africa provides an opportunity for adults to fund income generating endeavors through its micro-loans program. Business enterprises created include: selling local crafts like baskets and jewelry; opening a bakery; motorcycle “taxi” transport service, and knitting dolls for an American company as well as making and selling soap. Library and Computers Through a generous donation, inspired by a visit to Connect Africa, a library was built just in time for a group of visitors armed with hundreds of pounds of books, and the desire to shelve them. Village children, many of whom had never before held a book, joyfully participated in the library opening. Soon after, a donor who is a computer expert from Dell came to visit Connect Africa (and returned for 5 consecutive Decembers!) and outfitted the library with laptops loaded with educational material. Today the library is well used by area school children. Learn more about how your donation can make a difference here. |
